Bought A Vacant Home? Hire A Pest Control Service Before Moving In

You can often save a bundle of cash by purchasing a home that has sat empty for a while. Such a home likely needs a lot of work, but if you are willing to do that work, you can end up with a gorgeous home at an affordable price. Before you move in, though, there's a professional you need to call: the exterminator. Here are the pest controls services you should have performed on an empty home before move-in.

Putting down cockroach and ant baits and traps.

Cockroaches and ants are two of the most common bugs that invade empty homes. They are not picky and can feed on most anything left behind by previous owners, from food scraps to wallpaper paste. By putting down some baits and traps for both of these bugs, your pest control expert can eradicate them before you move in. You don't want to move in before doing this because if there are bugs present, the food you bring into the home will send them into a feeding frenzy, after which they will reproduce rapidly. It's easiest to get rid of them before you move in when their numbers are smaller.

Setting a few mouse traps.

Your pest control company should also set a few mouse traps. They may or may not catch any mice in those traps, but at least by setting them, you'll find out whether you have a mouse problem. When a home is empty, there's not usually enough food to support too large of a mouse population, so it's feasible to trap them all and get rid of them before you move in.

Inspecting for access points.

Your pest control specialist should also walk through the entire home and around the outside of the home to identify spots where pests could enter. In an abandoned home, there are almost certainly some possible entry points. These could be gaps along the sides of windows, holes in the foundation, vents that don't have covers in them, or even holes in the roof. Usually, a pest control expert won't repair these entry points, but they will give you a list of them so you can contact the relevant professionals and have the issues addressed.

A home may be vacant of humans, but there are likely still some pests living within its walls. Don't move in until you hire a pest control company to perform the services above.
