Pest Control Recommendations For Your Home And Garden

Blog

Pests can be a problem inside your home or around your outdoor spaces and backyard area whenever there is an opportunity for them to move in. The outside is already a natural environment for pests, but when you don't keep up your yard spaces or leave food and water sources, you are going to attract pests from many areas outside. Here are some residential pest control recommendations for you to keep your home and garden protected against pest problems.

Inspect Your Landscaping

The first line of defense against pest problems in your home and yard is to keep the outside of your home in a condition where it is not going to attract unwanted pests and infestations. If you store a supply of firewood outside, keep the area away from your home and stored up off the ground. When you place your firewood onto a foundation of concrete blocks or a metal grave, you prevent insects and mice from having direct access to your firewood pile from the soil, and it will also keep the firewood dry off the ground. Be sure you rotate your firewood to use the oldest first, and check it for pests regularly. And when you bring in firewood, be sure you burn it immediately so you eliminate the chance of bringing in a pest with the wood.

You should also keep areas around the outside of your home and foundation cleared of trash, dead leaves, twigs, and other debris that can accumulate. Contact a pest control professional to apply an exterior foundation treatment to treat termites in the soil and on the outside of your house to prevent their damage. If you discover a nest of mice or fire ants, you can request a safe treatment for your yard to keep them out and also protect your family against harmful pesticides.

Manage Indoor Areas

In addition to your property's exterior, the inside of your home can become an attractive space for pests if it is not kept up to certain standards. The areas where you use for storage of boxes, papers, and food can become a prime place for pests to make a home. For example, if you keep a stack of newspapers and magazines, the papers can be a food source or nest opportunity for insects or mice. Clean up these areas regularly to prevent pest attraction. You can store items, but be sure to clean around them regularly or once a week to prevent pest build-up opportunities.

Look for areas that pests can use for safety or a nest and seal them off against this. For example, look for cracks around the floorboards, baseboards, or wood panels under your kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Seal up any openings with caulk or steel wool. And if there are any openings to the outside, such as along a door frame or threshold, around a window screen, or the opening through your exterior wall where the cable or internet wire enters your home, seal them up to prevent insect or pest travel to your home's interior.
